For those of you that don’t know, on October 1, 2006, Microsoft decided that new servers licensed with Windows Server Datacenter Edition (and previous licenses with new version rights) will have license rights to run an unlimited number of virtualized Windows Server instances. By simply licensing the server’s processors with Windows Server Datacenter Edition, customers will be able to run Windows Server Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, Datacenter Edition or a mix of the three editions without having to track the number of virtual machines or pay for additional Windows Server licenses.

With Microsoft’s Software Licensing and Protection Services (SLPS), you can create tailored products from a single code base without rebuilding. Products can be easily defined, licenses generated, and customers activated in minutes. You can even create and easily track trial versions—and turn any application into a time-limited or try-and-buy version without modifying or recompiling code.
Think of dynamic licensing as a way of customizing your software to your specific needs. Instead of constantly paying for newer programs with a majority of applications that you will never use, you can now easily add specific features that you actually need. Modules can be simply added without removing previously existing modules. This is the essence of dynamic licensing. This will save you downloading time, money and disk space.
The Apache Software Foundation uses various software licenses to distribute software and documentation, to accept regular contributions from individuals and corporations, and to accept larger grants of existing software products. We are also in the process of updating the Apache licenses to reflect changes in the community regarding patents and contributing.
These licenses help us achieve our goal of providing reliable and long-lived software products through collaborative open source software development. In all cases, contributors retain full rights to use their original contributions for any other purpose outside of Apache while providing the ASF and its projects the right to distribute and build upon their work within Apache.
Found this at Bitpipe, its very useful for companies that make their own applications in house.
Think you’re not in the software development business? Think again. Even companies that make the business decision to rely on off-the-shelf software wind up doing some of their own software development to customize things for their environment. And that doesn’t include the stray legacy application or two that needs to be integrated into modern environments. Then there are companies whose primary business is creating software solutions for clients. Development projects cover a lot of ground, from commercial software or internal applications, to client-server or Web-based applications, to new development projects or integrating legacy software. Whether your primary business is software, or you’re just trying to keep the business going, the successful development projects follow the same basic process: Analyze, Design, Develop, Test and Deploy.
Process Management
Good process management ensures the timely delivery of the end products.
- Software Development Methodologies. In order to ensure data quality, development teams need to follow best practices. Whether making a decision about migrating to the newest technologies or upgrading the environment to comply with new ISO, CMM or CMMI regulations, development methodologies need to be continuously evaluated and iterated to ensure quality.
- Software Configuration Management. Also known as configuration management (CM) or environment mapping, it’s a detailed report of the company’s hardware, software and network systems, their version numbers and installed patches. In a development environment, this also refers to documentation of code, as well as errors and requested changes.
Analysis
The successful development project is one that results in software that is what the customer wants. To that end, gathering requirements is critical. A common understanding and sign-off of a project’s objectives helps ensure success.
- Software Selection. Once requirements have been determined, the next step is to select the appropriate software. This is the classic buy-versus-build analysis. In some cases, it may be the right solution is to build a new piece of software. In many, though, it may be faster and more affordable to purchase an off-the-shelf solution. In other cases, requirements are so critical to the business, that acquiring technology by buying the company who makes it is the right step. Defining requirements and getting buy-in from all parties involved is crucial to making this decision.
- Software Licensing. A key component of the analysis phase is the buy vs. build step. Smart business analysis adds a third option, which is licensing key components. An effective, disciplined licensing program can greatly extend an IT budget.
Dell has had problems with software licensing when they ship pre-installed software on their computers. The software is perfectly legal but Dell is forcing customers to agree to terms and conditions with out producing the proper documents. Here is one man’s story.
“Kat and I just received the Dell Inspiron 5100 notebook we ordered from Dell Canada. We quickly ran across problems.
I pushed the power button to turn on computer. I got the Dell POST screen, then a screen from Dell (Photo):
SOFTWARE LICENSES
- Before using your computer, read all of the software license
agreements that came with each program that you ordered.
There may be several agreements to examine. To comply with
the terms and conditions of the software license agreements,
you must consider any CD or diskette set of Dell-installed software
as BACKUP copies of the software installed on your computer's
hard-disk drive.
- If you did not order Dell-installed software for this computer,
or if you do not accept all the terms of the licenses, please call
the customer assistance telephone number listed in your system
documentation.
Press any key on the keyboard to indicate that you have
read all of the software licenses and agree to their terms.
